Introduction

When I was little, I was given a lovely doll. My Auntie made some clothes for her and I very carefully made a pillow. That was my first sewing experience and I was hooked. I made my first dress at 11 and never stopped! After making my own wedding dress and bridesmaids’ dresses people started approaching me to design for them too. Following a City & Guilds diploma in Pattern Cutting & Design in 1988 I was headhunted by Confetti in Farnham. My business has flourished, and I now focus on bespoke designer items.

Bespoke Design: The Perfect Dress for Special Occasions

I always take my lead from the bride or customer during our initial free consultation. Most individuals know what suits them and what their needs are; therefore I rarely make any corrections. Once an idea has been communicated I sketch it out to make sure I have interpreted it accurately. This ensures my customer and I are on the same page. We then go through my range of fabric swatches and available stock fabrics. If the fabric you require is not currently in stock, I will contact my comprehensive network of suppliers or search with you online to find the right fabrics and embellishments for you. It is at this stage that I am able to provide a quotation for consideration before a formal booking is made.

The Design Process

There are usually 3 stages to the design and dressmaking process. First fitting: The garment is fully cut out and tacked, to confirm that what has been done so far is as required. This can be tried on and at this stage the initial garment design is ready to have any extra ideas incorporated before I start sewing. It is not an issue to change your mind at this point.

Second fitting: The garment will be almost complete apart from finishing (hem lines, zips etc). At this stage we will be able to confirm that what I’ve made is exactly what you require but again, alterations can be made if necessary. Third/fourth fitting: The garment is ready for you to try-on and take away if you’re happy. Again, any last minute changes can be communicated at this stage and a fourth fitting can be scheduled if required.
